IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall Across India Due to Low-Pressure System

New Delhi, July 17, 2024 — The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across various regions of India, driven by a low-pressure area over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal. This system, in conjunction with cyclonic circulation, is set to impact coastal, southern, and central regions over the next several days.

Coastal and Southern India

The low-pressure area is forecasted to move northwestward towards the Odisha coast over the next two days, intensifying as it progresses. This movement is expected to bring:

•Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana: Anticipated to receive extremely heavy rainfall on July 18th and 19th.

•Vidarbha and South Chhattisgarh: Significant rainfall is predicted on July 19th and 20th.

•South Odisha: Heavy downpours expected on July 19th.

•Cyclonic Circulation Over Kutch and Northeast Arabian Sea

A separate cyclonic circulation over Kutch and the adjoining Northeast Arabian Sea will also contribute to the rainfall:

Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, and Gujarat State: Set to experience extremely heavy rainfall on July 18th and 19th, with heavy to very heavy rainfall continuing over the next three days.

West, Central, East, and South Peninsular India

Over the next five days, these regions will see widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. Specific predictions include:

•Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Telangana: Isolated extremely heavy rainfall from July 18th to 20th.

•South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, Gujarat State, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam: Extremely heavy rainfall on July 18th and 19th.

•Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall on July 18th.

•Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and North Interior Karnataka: Heavy rainfall over the next five days.

•Rayalaseema and Gangetic West Bengal: Heavy rainfall on July 19th and from July 20th to 22nd, respectively.

•Jharkhand: Heavy rainfall expected on July 21st and 22nd.

Northern and Central India

Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, with isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Rajasthan over the next five days. Specific forecasts include:

•Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and East Rajasthan: Isolated heavy rainfall over the next five days.

•Punjab: Heavy rainfall on July 18th.

•West Rajasthan: Heavy rainfall on July 20th and 21st.

•Haryana-Chandigarh: Heavy rainfall on July 18th, 19th, and 21st and 22nd.

•Uttar Pradesh: Heavy rainfall on July 21st and 22nd.

•Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Very heavy rainfall likely on July 21st and from July 21st to 22nd, respectively.

Residents in these regions are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of intense rainfall
