Education Focus: IIT Madras and Asha Chennai, a public charitable trust that works for education of the underprivileged

Smart boards and videos can be a nightmare for urban high school students and low facilities. But such dreams have come true for the students of 450 schools in the remote Thiruvallur District of Tamil Nadu, which have access to some of the highest quality digital resources. This happened with Asha Kanini, an app to provide easy access to high-quality digital resources to enhance their classroom teaching skills.

The app is network-independent, supports multiple operating systems and devices, and can be customized to work in any language and curriculum. Pravartak, a Technology Innovation Hub sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the auspices of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) at IIT Madras and Asha Chennai, a charitable fund working on education of the poor, they spread the use of Asha Kanini in all public schools, by conducting a pilot program in Thiruvallur District. They aim to make it available to all schools in Tamil Nadu and throughout India.

The two organizations have teamed up to launch the Pravartak Asha Rural Technology Centers (RTC) in Seethanjeri and Kanakamma Chathiram in the Tiruvallur District, which will take Computer Science Literacy to remote public schools and empower student schools in rural areas. A further 25 RTCs are still being planned in the coming years across Tamil Nadu.

Along with eleven other start-up companies, Pravartak is launching an alliance of deep technology and engineering under the mission STAC.DB – Indian Space Technologies and Applications Consortium Design Bureau. It will focus on building the Atmanirbhar ecosystem that ends up with space technologies that include access to where it is needed, fast start-up capabilities, satellites, sensors, next-generation communications such as 6G, satellite data, and its systems.

The consortium will work on the construction and production of a space car (Light and Super Rocket), multi-rocket launching capabilities, satellite design, production, integration and construction, software, hardware, and communication components, satellite security systems in a cyber way communication security and physical security and ground channels, data processing, communication matching and geospatial application fields.

RASA (Regenerative Agriculture Stack Architecture), a proposed technology platform developed by Pravartak in partnership with BNY Mellon will help farmers to monitor and adjust their planting and harvesting process more quickly to maximize profits. The bulk will cover the entire farm and kitchen cycle, including pre-plowing, planting, harvesting, storage / shipping, marketing and payment.
