NHPC yesterday signed two MoUs to develop “pilot green hydrogen technologies” in line with the country’s commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of the power sector in Leh and Kargil districts of the Union Territory of Ladakh. The MoUs were signed in the august presence of Shri R.K. Mathur, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor, Union Territory of Ladakh. As per MoU signed for Leh area, NHPC will consider development of Pilot Green Hydrogen microgrid based on fuel cell including hydrogen generation to meet the power requirements of NHPC guest house at Nimmo Bazgo Power Plant (Leh) in NHPC premises. According to the MoU signed for Kargil district, the hydrogen produced in Kargil will be used in mobility fuel cells that will be able to run two buses for up to 8 hours in the local Kargil area.
NHPC will scale up commercial-scale hydrogen production to meet Ladakh region’s hydrogen needs in various sectors such as mobility, transportation, heating and microgrid, and a follow-up MoU will be signed separately.
