NASA has announced a delay in the return of four astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS) due to Hurricane Milton which is currently tracking towards Florida’s coast. The Crew-8 mission, originally scheduled to depart on Monday, October 7, will now be postponed until at least Sunday, October 13.
The astronauts were set to splash down in the waters off Florida, but the hurricane’s direct path has made safe re-entry impossible. NASA and SpaceX continue to monitor weather conditions and plan to provide a further update on Friday, October 11.
Crew member Matthew Dominick took to social media, sharing an awe-inspiring timelapse video of Earth from space as they wait for the green light to return. The departure plan had been put in motion with the arrival of SpaceX’s Crew-9 last month, which was also delayed by two days due to another storm, Hurricane Helene.
The situation showcases how weather on Earth can impact space missions, as both NASA and SpaceX prioritize safety while navigating unpredictable storm paths.
