In a significant recognition of India’s rich traditional herbal knowledge systems, custodians from Jammu & Kashmir and Gujarat were recently awarded patents for their unique herbal practices. These patents were presented at two events: one at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar, and the other at the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Gandhinagar, on October 22, 2024.
India’s traditional herbal knowledge is a precious resource, safeguarded by knowledgeable individuals who deeply understand local flora and their medicinal properties. These custodians employ sustainable, natural solutions to address health challenges and agricultural needs, including livestock care. In a time of growing concerns over environmental impact and antimicrobial resistance, such herbal practices have become even more valuable, warranting integration into the formal healthcare system.
The National Innovation Foundation-India (NIF), an autonomous institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has been instrumental in preserving and protecting this indigenous knowledge. By granting patents, NIF aims to enable the scaling of these practices for broader social benefits and foster potential industry collaborations for creating affordable healthcare solutions.
On October 22, NIF awarded patents to 26 knowledge holders, recognizing their outstanding contributions to herbal medicine. These patents serve to protect and scientifically validate these herbal remedies, facilitating their transition into commercially viable and socially impactful products. By securing Intellectual Property (IP) rights for these practices, NIF aims to bridge informal and formal healthcare systems, leveraging traditional knowledge to benefit public health.
These initiatives underscore the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge while supporting sustainable and cost-effective solutions for healthcare and economic development.
