For the past 50 years, this friendly relationship is still intact. Recently, Gulzar published Javed Akhtar’s book ‘Jadunama’, the title of which is derived from Akhtar’s pen name Jadoo. Friendship started with the movie ‘Andaz’

Javed Akhtar recalled the stories of his friendship with Gulzar Sahib at the time of his book’s release. He said, ‘Gulzar Sahab wrote the dialogues and we wrote the additional script. The film became a hit and Gulzar Sahab and I became good friends. We don’t meet often, but whenever we do, we talk for hours,” Javed Akhtar said, adding that “we still write letters. We talk about what we have written and what each other has read. The good thing is that I have the advantage because I remember most things and he doesn’t remember much.

There is no competition between us

Talking about his friendship with Gulzar, Javed Akhtar said that there was never any competition between us. We always encouraged each other. He said that our writing styles are different from each other but one thing we have in common is that we both write well. Our friendship is similar to that of Kaifi Sahab and Sardar Jafri Bhai. I have praised Gulzar sahab many times for those songs he wrote 20 years ago.

Gulzar is learning the nuances of Hindi from Javed Akhtar

On the other hand, Gulzar said that he often takes Akhtar’s help to learn the nuances of Hindi as he is not well versed in the language. He said that ‘I am not a very educated person. I failed college. Whenever I am at a loss for words in Hindi, I call Javed Sahab.

Gulzar Sahab reached out for the publication of Javed Akhtaka’s book Jadoonam. On the occasion, Javed Akhtar called Gulzar Sahib ‘the month of Eid’. Javed Akhtar said he was grateful to him for publishing the book. He said, “Eid moon has a minimum guarantee that it is visible only once a year, even this minimum guarantee is not available with them”. Javed Akhtar said, ‘I am thankful to Gulzar Sahab. He doesn’t move much and I’m glad he came here to publish my book.
