Imitation describes Greenland’s slow summer heat

The confusing, decade-long decline of summer heat throughout Greenland’s has been described by researchers at Hokkaido University in Japan. Their observational analysis and computer simulation revealed that changes in the water temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles to the south, result in cooler summer temperatures throughout Greenland. The results, published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, will help improve future forecasts for Greenland glaciers and the melting of ice in the Arctic ice for decades to come.

“Greenland glaciers are melting over time due to global warming associated with greenhouse gas emissions, but the rate of melting has decreased over the past decade,” said Hokkaido University environmental scientist Shinji Matsumura. “That slow pace was a paradox until our research showed that it was linked to changes in the El Niño climate pattern in the Pacific.”

Studies Indicates

El Niño is a natural, circulating substance that raises the water temperature in the central and northeastern Pacific Ocean. Scientists know that such radical changes are taking place in some parts of the world because of their association with powerful wind waves called teleconnections. But meteorologists are struggling to figure out how Pacific El Niño can cool Greenland in the summer, as tropical east winds often keep that telephone connection from forming. which pushed warmer sea temperatures northward than usual. This took them beyond the eastern hemisphere and allowed spacecraft connections reaching Greenland to form.

Next, this telecommunication disrupts the atmospheric conditions as well as the climate around Greenland in the summer. In particular, they are driving the strongest storms in the world. This is enough, new research shows, to explain lower temperatures than expected and melting of ice in the region. Temperatures and melting points of ice sheet peaked in 2012.

Global Warming trends

“The findings, as well as the decline in Greenland’s summer temperatures, do not undermine the seriousness of climate change or the need to address greenhouse gas emissions,” Matsumura emphasized. Rather, they are showing how environmental changes can be made in line with the tendency of long-term global warming to vary in local conditions.

Greenland

Warming is in the Greenland area. The Arctic plateau remains one of the hottest places on Earth. El Niño events are often followed by a similar but different climate change called La Niña, in which the temperature of the oceans drops. These events often bring high temperatures to Greenland. “We expect global warming and glaciers in Greenland and the rest of the Arctic to grow rapidly in the future due to the effects of anthropogenic warming,” Matsumura said.
