India made a powerful statement on the world stage at the Mission Innovation 2025 Annual Gathering in Seoul, showcasing its leadership in clean energy and sustainable biotechnology. Represented by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the Indian delegation co-led the Mission Integrated Biorefinery alongside the Netherlands under the Mission Innovation 2.0 initiative, emphasizing India commitment to a low-carbon, innovation-driven future.
The centerpiece of India presentation was the unveiling of the BioE3 Policy Biotechnology for Environment, Energy, and Economy. This policy outlines a national strategy to develop bio-based alternatives for fuels, materials, and chemicals, aligning seamlessly with India’s broader clean energy goals. The BioE3 framework promotes low-emission, sustainable biomanufacturing, supporting cutting-edge research in bio-feedstocks, industrial biotech, waste-to-value solutions, and green manufacturing practices.
India also highlighted progress in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Bioenergy (CCUB). By integrating CCUB with biomanufacturing, India is reducing industrial emissions while boosting production of clean fuels and advanced materials. This strategy is seen as crucial for India net-zero targets and was widely appreciated by other Mission Innovation member nations for its replicability and innovation potential.
India’s participation went beyond policy showcases. At dedicated breakout sessions and field visits to institutions like Hanyang University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Indian experts engaged with global scientists to share knowledge, explore solutions and form new partnerships. These exchanges focused heavily on biomass innovation and scaling clean technologies from labs to real-world applications.
The gathering concluded with a renewed global pledge to accelerate bioinnovation in clean energy, with India’s BioE3 Policy hailed as a model framework. Its emphasis on collaboration, research, and scalability positions India as a trailblazer in green technology.
As nations worldwide look to combat climate change while fostering sustainable growth, India’s active role in Mission Innovation underscores a powerful message: shared innovation can build a cleaner, more equitable planet.
