Israeli forces detained around 100 suspected Hamas militants during a raid at Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza, the Israeli military announced on Monday. The operation took place as part of intensified Israeli efforts in Gaza with troops reportedly storming the hospital compound on Friday and leaving by Saturday.
According to the Israeli military, the soldiers discovered weapons, intelligence documents, and funds linked to militant activity within the hospital. “The soldiers apprehended approximately 100 terrorists from the compound, including some who attempted to flee while civilians were being evacuated,” the military statement said.
However, Gaza health authorities and Hamas deny these claims, stating that no militant activity was occurring in the facility, which was already struggling under the ongoing Israeli operations in the area. Gaza’s health ministry reported that dozens of male medical staff members were detained, and damage to the hospital infrastructure has worsened the already dire healthcare conditions.
A military spokesperson clarified that some of the suspected militants were allegedly disguised as medical personnel, necessitating the checks on hospital staff. Footage from Gaza’s health ministry, which Reuters has not independently verified, showed signs of destruction to several hospital buildings.
Gaza medical personnel reported that evacuations were particularly distressing, with hospital staff and civilians separated into two lines men and women and some detainees initially left without clothing, which the Israeli military says was necessary to conduct weapon checks.
During the raid, two children reportedly died in the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to Gaza medics, after infrastructure damage affected the facility’s generators and oxygen supply. In response, the Israeli military stated that efforts were made to protect civilians in the hospital and that supplies, including fuel and medical provisions, were delivered to sustain essential services.
