Houston: Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, met with US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Geoffrey Pyatt, at GasTech 2024 in Houston. The two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation across the energy value chain, with a focus on ensuring a “just and orderly energy transition.”
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the world’s largest event for natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, low-carbon solutions, and climate technology. Puri and Pyatt reviewed the current energy collaboration between India and the US, exploring avenues to deepen this partnership. The leaders emphasized the critical role of institutions and companies from both nations in strengthening ties in the energy sector.
Sharing details of the meeting, Puri posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We reviewed the existing energy cooperation and agreed to explore ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across the energy value chain for just and orderly energy transition.”
As part of his visit, Puri also inaugurated the India Pavilion at GasTech, which showcased Indian energy companies’ technological advancements and their growing capabilities. He noted that India is taking significant steps towards energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During a ministerial panel at GasTech, Puri highlighted India’s growing energy demand, which is expected to rise at a compounded annual growth rate of 3% per annum by 2040, potentially doubling by 2050. He emphasized that India’s proactive approach has mitigated the global energy crisis, as the country consumes around 5 million barrels of crude oil daily. He also noted that initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) demonstrate India’s commitment to clean energy.
Puri’s remarks came during a panel discussion alongside energy ministers from Egypt, Nigeria, Turkey, and the US, where he discussed emerging markets’ role in reshaping the global energy landscape.
Earlier in Washington, DC, Puri and US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm co-chaired the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) Ministerial. The two leaders reviewed initiatives focused on clean energy innovation, energy security, and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy. The discussions covered areas like renewable energy, responsible oil and gas, emerging fuels, and sustainable growth.
India and the US have been working closely to foster cooperation in energy, with efforts aimed at building resilient, diversified supply chains and advancing clean energy technologies for mutual benefit.
