Environment Focus: Fifty years ago, World Environment Day continues to shape global movement

World Environment Day can be traced back to a warm June in Stockholm, Sweden 50 years ago. It was then that the United Nations Conference on the Environment of the Human Environment took place. It is regarded as the first international ecological conference, at which point the concept of World Environment Day was officially established, and the first was in 1973.Since then, the annual event, which will be held on June 5, has helped both to celebrate the planet and shed light on the dangers it faces. Experts say it also encouraged change, which helped lead to landmark international agreements covering everything from plastic pollution to food waste.

“World Environment Day provides a forum for collective action,” said AtifIkram Butt, UN High Commissioner for Public Affairs and Liaison at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). “It helps to amplify the voices and strengthen the participant agency to influence change.”World Environment Day began at a time of growing concern about the human impact on the earth. A series of natural disasters during the 1960’s – from the drought and collapse of the mines to pollution and the prevalence of fish poisoning – raised awareness of environmental degradation. That fragility was illustrated by the 1972 ‘Earthrise’ image taken by the Apollo 8 campaign – the first color image of our planet from space.

Previous themes of World Environment Day

Sweden is this year’s theme for World Environment Day and the theme is One World Only, focusing on the need for sustainable living in harmony with nature. It is a memorandum of understanding at the 1972 UN Convention on Human Nature and a reminder that planetary resources are depleting and depleted. The previous themes of World Environment Day are a brief reflection of current environmental concerns. For example, in 1977 the event focused on depletion of the ozone layer, and in 1983, acid rain fell. Although some of those threats have been subdued, others are forgotten. World Environment Day marked the change in climate in 1989.

Martina Otto, Head of the Office of the Secretary for Climate Change and Fresh Air, has been a part of the 23 ecological days since she joined UNEP in 1999.He notes that in some cases, World Environment Day also preceded the change in the world. Otto commends 2018 day for clearing the world-wide debate over the growing number of plastic pollution, with nearly 7 billion tons installed in the environment since 1950 pollution.

Earth’s past days have focused on everything from air pollution to food waste, and each year there has been an increase in the number of people – both inside and outside the internet – participating. For example, World Environment Day 2019 – hosted by China, focusing on air pollution – saw more than 12 million hashtags marking the day on Twitter and on China’s Weibo social network.

World Environment Day 2020 – hosted by Colombia and focused on biodiversity – saw more engagement. UNEP’s Time #ForNature campaign has garnered over 100 million views on UNEP communication channels. Snapchat has also created a special World Environment Day lens that is truly authentic with hundreds of millions of users worldwide. This year’s World Environment Day comes with a planet facing triple climate change, loss of ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as pollution and waste. With such issues at stake, the message of World Environment Day is urgent. This year’s repetition is expected to feature hundreds of events and events around the world, from the Cairo electric motorcade to the huge cyclathon in Mumbai to the e-waste drive in Bucharest.

Experts say that immediate action is needed to reverse the trend. To support UNEP we have developed the #OnlyOneEarth Practical Guide, a campus that provides governments, cities, businesses, community groups and individuals with important environmental actions they can take to make a real difference.”We must realize that we have only one planet, this one planet,” UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen said last week. “We have to move &achieve that long-term stability.”
