Environment Focus: Celebrating world Environment Day and Sweden  Speech delivered by Inger Andersen: UNEP

World Environment Day is a celebration. The celebration of the natural world and what it brings, as well as the celebration of the activists who strive to keep it healthy. But it is not always easy to celebrate as we look to the future ruled by a three-planet catastrophe. The problem of climate change. A baby born in 2020 will experience seven times more heat waves than a baby born in 1960, Environmental problem and biodiversity loss. When I was playing in the woods as a child, the birds were full of noise. Children today play peacefully: 600 million birds have migrated to Europe since 1980. The problem of pollution and waste. More than 800 million children are exposed to high levels of safe blood levels.

The triple problem is growing rapidly. Why?

Because we use an average of 1.7 planets a year. We Only Have One Earth. We have to accept that we are not doing enough to protect it.Therefore, I stand before you in Stockholm – when the 1972 United Nations Convention on Human Rights introduced a modern environmental organization. I stand before you after Stockholm +50, where world leaders met a few days ago and demonstrated a new commitment to correcting our mistakes. I stand in front of you because we have to do better.

We know what to do. Eliminate our addiction to mineral oil. Restore nature to its full glory. Change our diet plans. Make our cities green, vibrant and low in carbon – a Swedish Swedish commitment, from Kiruna to Malmo, from Stockholm to Gothenburg. And we can do it – as one people, living in one world. The land does not belong to the government, the people choose it. It’s not in business, people end up working with their money. We make up the earth. Therefore, we need to consider our present and future decisions. The world belongs to young people.

In the meantime, our communities and the economy are putting us on the right track. We take it from the belly of the earth, and we throw it out like garbage. And as we have confirmed, we must move from a straightforward economy to a roundabout economy, to an economy that puts the value of nature, not the importance of its destruction. We can choose how we take our holidays. We buy fast fashion. We can choose how we eat and how we throw away. We get our protein from meat. How do we drive and buy? We are warming our homes and empowering our industry. It is this use – in which we all participate – that drives the planet’s three dimensions. Weather problem. The problem of environmental loss. And the problem of pollution and waste.

Young people, including those in the room who are watching online, are talking. Through activism. Through protest movements. Your words can have a powerful effect on you every day.I urge you to use this roar to fight against the erosion of democratic principles. Holding leaders to the promises they have made regarding environmental issues. To protect your public space. Holding leaders accountable. Claiming environmental rights because they belong to you. Fighting disinformation and false information about facts and science.

Also, live your life well. Be brave and courageous and happy. No one asks you to limit your dreams or desires. But know that success and happiness do not have to be measured by the accumulation of material things, especially when consumerism is rampant in our planet. Take personal responsibility. Choose air-conditioning. Choose healthy foods. Choose green power. Choose a third party. Choose a better future.

And know that others have dreams and aspirations, which work like yours. Africa holds only a small percentage of greenhouse gas emissions but is severely affected by climate change. Does it make sense that the opportunity should be limited to where one is born?

So, please show solidarity. Work in a world where geography does not matter. We can use nature to unite, at a time when most of us seem to have forgotten that we are all in this together. We can let the One World concept lead us to the concept of One Humanity because this is what we are. Race, gender, religion and sexual orientation are all, in the end, such a small diversity: the essence of human beauty. We are separated. But we are the same. We must all show tolerance, wisdom and understanding in order to protect the Earth, our one home, so that we can live together as One Person because we have only one Earth.
