Sports Focus: ENG vs. NZ 3rd Test Day 4 England chasing 296 points, finished 183-2 on penalties day

England are close to a sweeping series after reaching the stumps 183-2 in their second innings on Sunday, needing 113 more runs against New Zealand with one day left in the third and final Test. Ollie Pope (81 unbeaten) and Joe Root (55 unbeaten) shared a unbeaten 132-run partnership in the third wicket. New Zealand 326 and Jack Leach took a total of 10 wickets at Headingley. The England spinner beat 5-66, including Trent Boult’s (4) last wicket, to take his 5-100 in the first innings. With the emphasis on exciting and powerful cricket under new captain Ben Stokes, England successfully chased 299 with 22 overs left in the second Test, and still has a full day of winning the third.

“I want to contribute to the win and I really enjoy working with Stokesy,” Leach said. “It’s really offensive and I enjoy that, and I’m trying to throw back the attack.” Earlier, Tom Blundell died of teammates also missed 88 at the end of New Zealand’s second innings. He shared another impressive partnership with Daryl Mitchell (56), who was trapped in the leg before the wicket this afternoon by pacer Matthew Potts (3-66). Both won 113 in the sixth wicket.

The visitors resumed the fourth day at 168-5, extending their lead to 223 during the day. Mitchell and Blundell had been outraged in England during the series, sharing 195 and 236 large tents at Lord’s and Trent Bridge, respectively, and the two reunited to end the home invasion. Mitchell became the first touring player to hit more than 500 runs in a Test series of three games or less in England.

England kicked off the day with an unexpected staff change when Ben Foakes in charge of a wicket was found to have COVID-19. He was already absent on the third day due to back stiffness. Sam Billings has been called up as an emergency replacement, earning his second Test title after his first appearance in the final game of the Ashes.

Billings, who will also be able to hit in the fourth innings, became the second England player to hold the series after Matt Parkinson replaced Leach in charge of the Lord’s. Neil Wagner was strangely caught in the back by Billings, who was unable to collect points edge well but he blocked the ball in the legs before throwing it when the ball fell to the bottom of another Leach wicket. England, down 55-6 in the first innings, quickly failed in the second when Alex Lees ran out of the nine, the victim of Zak Crawley’s jittery pursued a single effort and an excellent effort from the Kane Williamson and Boult team.

Crawley, on the other hand, came down the edge of the ledge eating the nails of the second slip and continued to look frightened. It was another unsatisfactory 25 knock from the under pressure, who tried to make a high cover against Michael Bracewell’s spin and simply pleaded with Williamson. Root reached 51-2 at the start of the 13th over in another high-scoring start from England by Brendon McCullum. Root even managed to push Wagner’s delivery over a third of six men with an amazingly constructed reverse scoop. The two men smiled shortly afterward. The runs kept flowing at the ODI level, with half of Pope and Root’s two hundred as England exploded 4.69 overs.

“Obviously we have to come back tomorrow and do good things again,” Leach said. “But it’s just a good idea, and you realize how many cricket decisions are probably based on bad behavior. It’s something I’ve never seen. And I’d love to be a part of it.” Fans can attend the last day for free, repeating Nottinghamshire’s successful campaign in the second round.
