India Shows New Roadmap to Lead Global Electric Vehicle Market e-Mobility R&D Roadmap

New Delhi – India’s chief scientist, Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, has launched a new roadmap for research on electric mobility, aiming to make India a global leader in electric vehicle (EV) technology within five years. The “e-Mobility R&D Roadmap for India” outlines the need for a ₹1,200 crore investment in research and development.

Professor Sood emphasized the urgency of transitioning from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles to combat severe air pollution in cities. He noted that nearly 9 lakh electric vehicles were sold in the first half of 2024, with a target of 30% penetration by 2030.

The roadmap focuses on four key areas: improving battery technology, developing essential EV components, ensuring sustainable materials and recycling, and enhancing charging infrastructure. Promising battery technologies, such as sodium-ion and aluminum-ion, are highlighted as critical to making EVs more affordable and efficient.

India aims to reduce emission intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieve energy independence by 2047, aligning with its net-zero goals for 2070. The roadmap aims to eliminate India’s current reliance on imports for the e-mobility value chain, positioning the country as a leader in the global EV market.

Professor Karthick Athmanathan of IIT Madras, co-author of the report, stressed the importance of self-sufficiency, stating that India can lead the global electric vehicle supply chain through focused research and innovation.
