Dubai court has ordered the extradition of British citizen to Denmark in $1.7 billion tax fraud case

A Dubai court ruled Thursday that a 52-year-old British national accused of masterminding a $1.7 billion tax scheme will be extradited to Denmark. Sanjay Shah, a hedge fund trader, is accused of orchestrating a scheme that ran between 2012 and 2015 in which foreign businesses pretended to own shares in Danish companies and claimed tax refunds they were not entitled to.

The decision followed the hearing of an appeal by Chancellor Essam Issa Al Humaidan, the Attorney General of Dubai, to the Dubai Court of Cassation against a previous ruling by the Dubai Court of Appeal that rejected Shah’s extradition request, according to a statement released here on Thursday.

The Court of Cassation decided to return the matter to the Court of Appeal for a new hearing by another judicial authority. This court ordered the extradition of Shah to the Danish authorities. “The Dubai Public Prosecution has submitted to the Court of Appeal all the documents and documents submitted by the Danish authorities against Sanjay Shah that proved his involvement in fraud and money laundering,” it said.

Dubai police arrested Shah earlier this year following an extradition request from Danish authorities. Shah’s lawyer, Ali Al Zarouni, said his client would appeal the extradition decision by the Dubai Court of Appeal. In September, judges in Dubai presiding over a civil suit brought by the Danish government ruled that Shah must pay back US$1.25 billion to the Danish state. The arrest and sentence are in line with Dubai’s commitment to combating illicit financial activities, including money laundering, the agency said. The UAE supports global efforts to combat money laundering and fraud and strives to fully implement international standards and policies, he added.
