Former US President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has reiterated his support for Israel, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to quickly end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. During a press conference on Thursday, Trump recounted his July meeting with Netanyahu, emphasizing his advice to “get this over with” to stop the bloodshed.
Trump has been critical of calls for a ceasefire, particularly from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, arguing that such measures would only allow Hamas to regroup. “I will give Israel the support that it needs to win but I do want them to win fast,” Trump stated.
The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with recent assassinations of leaders from Hamas and Hezbollah escalating the risk of a broader regional conflict. Trump also harshly criticized pro-Palestinian supporters, labeling them as “pro-Hamas thugs” and threatening to take action against them if he were to become president.
Amid ongoing efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza, including negotiations involving Egypt, the US, and Qatar, Trump and Netanyahu have both denied recent reports suggesting they had discussions regarding a ceasefire and hostage release talks.
The latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict began on October 7, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages being taken. Israel’s subsequent military response has led to over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, widespread displacement, and severe humanitarian crises in Gaza, according to local health authorities. The conflict has drawn international condemnation and allegations of genocide against Israel, which the country denies.
