The United Nations has warned in a new report that the world will experience some 560 disasters each year by 2030

The world has experienced 350-500 major disasters each year for the past 20 years, according to a report published March 26, 2022. This is five times higher than in the last 30 years, the Global Assessment Report (GAR 2022) released by the United Nations in March 26, 2022.

The rapid increase in disasters could be due to climate change and adequate risk management, according to the local government organization. The UN Office for Disaster Reduction (UNDRR) released the report before the Global Disaster Risk Reduction Platform in May, 2022.

Poor governance and risk management systems basically undermine real global risk and put all of our social and economic benefits at risk, he notes. Ms. Mizutori, representing the Secretary-General of Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of UNDRR, said in a statement:

As the Mid-Term Review of the Sendai Framework progresses, this report should be a wake-up call that countries need to accelerate action on all four priorities of the Framework in order to halt the growing cyclone.

Persistent disasters will increase the burden of world poverty, the report said. Another 37.6 million people are estimated to be living in extreme poverty as a result of climate change and catastrophes by 2030, it has been observed. The “worst” situation of climate change and disasters will push 100.7 million more into poverty by 2030, according to the UN. .

Most of the countries most at risk of disaster are also those with the highest number of people living below the national poverty line, these include the Philippines, Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam from Asia-Pacific region.

About 90 percent of countries are at high risk according to the INFORM Natural Hazard Risk Index countries with middle and low income countries, with a national poverty rate of 34 percent. By comparison, so-called “low-risk” countries have less than 1 percent poverty.

The poor are the ones most affected by their reliance on foreign activities such as agriculture or loyalty to natural resources, both of which are at risk of climate change. Due to the lack of flexible financial means, the poorest are the most vulnerable to both the developing and the advanced. developed countries, says a UN report.

Developing countries are at high risk, not insured

The direct annual economic losses resulting from disasters have more than doubled in the last three decades. It rose to more than $ 170 billion in 2010 from an average of $ 70 billion in the 1990s. Only 40 percent of all disaster-related losses are insured between 1980 and 2018.

This means that 60 percent of all disaster-related losses were not covered. Again, there is widespread inequality between developed and developing countries.Insurance is highly concentrated in rich countries, with insurance coverage in many developing and developing countries being less than 10 percent and sometimes almost zero, despite having a significant impact on disasters.
