Research Focus: Research found depletion of big fish populations by 90% and destruction of 50% of coral reefs

Dr Jitendra Singh reiterated the Department’s broader vision such as “Advances in Earth System Science to improve lives through world-class services on climate, climate, ocean, coast and natural hazards; sustainable use of marine resources and tropical surveys ”. Dr Jitendra Singh also interviewed academics, students, officials and ordinary citizens who took part in the Coastal Cleaning Campaign in 9 maritime districts in Kerala and Chennai beach. The Minister commended the efforts of the Vice-Chancellors, PRIs, Corporations for collecting single-use plastic, electronic and medical scrap during the cleaning of beaches in 10 areas off World Maritime Day celebrations. He said such good work should continue throughout the year and efforts should be made to engage more people with widespread advertising campaigns.
