Joshimath demolition necessary from dangerous zones, Hotel Malari Inn to be demolished first

Demolition of two hotels in Uttarakhand‘s Joshimath  Hotel Malari Inn and Hotel Mount View and some houses that have developed cracks due to land subsidence will take place today. Manikant Mishra, a senior official of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), told a news agency that the Malari Inn would be demolished first and that it would be destroyed “gradually”.

The Malari Inn will be demolished gradually today. The upper part will be demolished first. This is being done because the two hotels have tilted and come very close to each other sinking.Their demolition is necessary because there are several houses… around. If these two sink further, they may collapse… so the experts decided to demolish them.

All residents have been evacuated from the “dangerous” zones and the demolition will be carried out by experts from Roorkee’s Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee with state and national disaster response teams ready to help. Reports say at least 4,000 people have been evicted.

Local residents Manmohan Singh Rawat “They will demolish these hotels for the safety of 15-20 families who are still living here. Our houses have been destroyed”.

Visuals show huge cracks in the buildings and roads of the temple town, where nearly 700 structures were damaged. District officials put red “X” marks on more than 200 houses to indicate their condemnation and asked to be moved to relief camps or rented accommodation; in the latter case, the state will give each family ₹4,000 per month for the next six months.

• what does the government do?

Besides evacuating residents and demolishing damaged buildings, the Uttarakhand government is also working on a relocation and rehabilitation plan. Possible relocation sites include Gauchar (90 km away) and Pipalkoti (35 km), according to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who said efforts were being made to rebuild the city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged the Centre’s support.

•What do the locals say?

Prakash Bhutiyal, 50, said seven of the 11 rooms in his guesthouse residence have cracks and that he and his family are waiting to move out. Our family of nine was forced to live in just one room, we left all our belongings in the open. We have yet to be moved to a safer place.

Some seem amenable to relocation to an area near Joshimath, but others have opposed it and are demanding financial compensation – a “one-time settlement”.

One affected resident – Deepak Rawat, who was relocated with his family after cracks appeared in their house behind Hotel Mount View – said, “The government should rehabilitate us to a place near Joshimath”.

•Cracks are appearing elsewhere in the district

Meanwhile, cracks were also seen on some houses in Bahuguna Nagar in Karnaprayag area of Chamoli district where Joshimath is located. Sitarganj MLA Saurabh Bahuguna said villages in the vicinity are facing a similar situation.

•What caused land subsidence?

Experts and residents have long warned that large-scale construction work in and around the city, including power projects built by companies such as the state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation, could lead to landslides. NTPC – India’s largest power producer – says its tunneling and other work is not responsible for the cracks in the town of about 17,000 people.
