Cyberattack Hits Japan’s Space Aerospace Exploration Agency

Japan’s space agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has experienced a cyberattack, according to a spokesperson. The agency stated that the hackers accessed information but assured that it did not include anything crucial for rocket and satellite operations. The spokesperson mentioned the possibility of unauthorized access by exploiting vulnerabilities in network equipment but did not provide specific details about the attack or when it occurred.
The discovery of the potential unauthorized access came after JAXA received information from an external organization and conducted an internal investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and the agency did not disclose the identity of the external organization providing information.
Japanese media reports suggest that the cyberattack took place during the summer, and the police became aware of it, notifying JAXA in the autumn. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges and threats related to cybersecurity in various sectors, including space agencies.
