Anyone can be trained to be creative

This new approach, based on narrative theory, helps people to be creative in the way children and artists are: By making stories that think about other worlds, change perceptions and produce unexpected actions. Englishman and a member of Ohio State University’s Project Narrative.

Said Fletcher

“We as a society do not underestimate the ingenuity of children and many others because we are overwhelmed by the idea that some people are more creative than others,” But the truth is that we are not training to innovate properly. “Fletcher and Mike Benveniste, also from Project Narrative, discussed the art of art training in a recent article in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Researchers Effective methods

The two researchers successfully used the narrative method to train U.S. members. Army’s Command and General Staff College. Fletcher wrote a publicly available training manual based on his methods designed for senior officials and staff. They also work with the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Ohio State College of Engineering and a few Fortune 50 companies to teach art to their staff and students.

The current basis for training to establish a method known as alternative thinking, which has been used since the 1950s. It is a “calculation method” of innovation that treats the brain like a logical machine, Fletcher said.

It works with exercises designed, among other things, to increase working memory, promote consistent thinking and encourage problem-solving. But different thinking did not produce the results many expected, Fletcher said. The big problem is that its calculation is based on data and information about the problems and successes of the past. “But the human brain’s accounting machines can.”

creative training strategy

The creative narrative training approach uses many of the methods used by writers to create stories. One is to develop new worlds in your mind. For example, employees in a company may be asked to think of their unique customer – and then think of a world where all their customers are. How would that change their business? What did they need to do to survive?

One way is by changing one’s perspective. An official at a company may be asked to respond to a problem by assuming that he is a member of their group. The point of using these and other similar techniques is not that the conditions you dream of will actually happen, Fletcher said.

“Art is not about predicting the future in the right way. It’s about making yourself open to thinking about very different possibilities,” he said.

Fletcher noted that the narrative method of coaching creative arts by telling stories is similar to how young children create – and research shows that young children are more skilled at thinking than adults. But children’s ability to do creative work diminishes after four or five years of study. , academically. It is then that children begin intensive training of logic, semantic and memory.

More than 600 creative curriculum U.S. Army

It is better to hire a different group of people and train them in the arts. That creates a culture of awareness that there are already smart people in your organization that you are not using. Although this form of narrative training for innovation has already been well received, Fletcher and colleagues have begun formal testing. They conducted randomly controlled experimental curriculum tests on U.S. military officials. more than 600 which are part of the College of Command and General Staff College.

They also continue to work with new organizations, such as the Worthington District School in Ohio.Fletcher said this new approach to art training “could only come from the Ohio Regional Project Report.” Project Narrative is about how news works in the brain. It is the foundation that has helped us to integrate this new way of thinking and training to create”he said.
