China top diplomat Wang Yi “hopes and believes” that Germany will support China’s “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, China’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
Wang says this at a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who is visiting China until Saturday, adding that China had once supported German reunification.
Wang also says “To maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait, it is necessary to resolutely oppose separatist activities related to Taiwan independence, Taiwan’s return to China was an important part of the international order after World War II”.
Attempt by China to take control of Taiwan
Baerbock says any attempt by China to take control of Taiwan would be unacceptable and would have serious consequences for Europe. Her words were echoed by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell. Beijing, which claims that democratically ruled Taiwan is a Chinese province, has never ruled out using force to bring the island under its control. L
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday that it strongly endorsed Baerbock’s comments & thanks many high-ranking officials in the executive departments of various countries, including Germany, for their solidarity with Taiwan.
In a departure from the policies of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Olaf Scholz’s government is developing a new China strategy to reduce dependence on the Asian economic superpower, which has until now been a key export market for German goods.
China held three days of military drills around Taiwan since April 8, including simulated precision strikes by bombers and missile forces, after Tsai returned from Los Angeles to meet with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, angering Beijing.
Wang also said that China is willing to strengthen exchanges and communication with Germany to improve mutual understanding and prepare for a new round of Sino-German government consultations.
