A massive protest erupted at the Chandigarh University campus after midnight after videos of around 60 girls taking a bath in the hostel were leaked. The police reached the spot and arrested the student who allegedly shot the videos and sent them to a boy in Shimla who shared them on social media. A case under Section 354 c of the IPC and IT Act was registered against the accused girl at the Gharuan police station. The accused is a first-year MBA student, police said.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains appealed to the protesting students to maintain calm. “This is a very sensitive matter and concerns the dignity of our sisters and daughters. All of us, including the media, should be very careful, this is now also a test of us as a society,” he tweeted. Hundreds of students walked out on campus Saturday night after negotiations with authorities appeared to have failed. Several posts are appearing on social media claiming that the university authorities tried to cover up the incident.
Police have denied any death, injury or attempted suicide as a result of the video leak. “It’s a matter of a video made by a student and spreading it. An FIR was registered in the matter and the accused student was arrested. No deaths have been reported in connection with this incident. According to the medical records, no attempt (to commit suicide) was reported,” said Mohali SSP Vivek Soni. An unverified video of the girl who shot and posted the videos also went viral where she confessed to her crime. Some insiders claimed that the accused demanded money from the girls.
