Nigeria has confirmed 21 cases of monkeys since the beginning of the year with one death reported, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Sunday night.Monkeypox, a commonly found virus, is found in the African countries of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria.
But it has caused widespread fears after more than 200 suspected cases of the virus were found in at least 19 countries since early May, mainly in Europe. No fatalities have been reported so far. The NCDC said of the 61 monkeypox suspects reported since January, 21 had been confirmed dead by the death of one man, a 40-year-old man. The cases were reported in nine provinces and in the organization’s capital Abuja.”Among the 21 cases reported in 2022 to date, there is no evidence of any new or unusual transmission of the virus, or changes in its clinical manifestations (including symptoms, profile and infection),” the NCDC said.Six of these were found this month, he said.
