Cannabis has long been recognized for its medicinal properties, with cannabinoids like CBD and THC gaining widespread attention. Now, another cannabis compound, Cannabigerol (CBG), is emerging as a potential game-changer in the field of therapeutic applications. Often referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids,” CBG is garnering interest for its ability to metabolize into both CBD and THC. Unlike THC, however, CBG does not induce a high, making it a promising candidate for various treatments.
In a groundbreaking human clinical trial, researchers explored the effects of CBG on anxiety, stress, and cognitive function. The study, involving 34 healthy participants, revealed that those who took a tincture containing CBG reported feeling significantly less anxious and stressed within an hour compared to those given a placebo. An unexpected yet intriguing finding was that participants also performed slightly better in verbal memory tests after being dosed with CBG, a stark contrast to THC, which is known to impair verbal memory.
“Cannabigerol (CBG) is a phytocannabinoid increasing in popularity, with preclinical research indicating it has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. However, there are no published clinical trials to corroborate these findings in humans,” wrote the study authors, led by psychologist Carrie Cuttler of Washington State University. “The primary objective of this study was to examine the acute effects of CBG on anxiety, stress, and mood. Secondary objectives were to examine whether CBG produces subjective drug effects or motor and cognitive impairments.”
While the findings are promising, the researchers urge caution, drawing parallels to the surge in interest surrounding CBD, where public enthusiasm outpaced scientific research. As the understanding of CBG’s effects continues to evolve, so too do the possibilities for its use in cannabis-based treatments. The potential for CBG to offset the detrimental effects of THC on verbal memory, a goal that CBD initially aimed to achieve but fell short, is particularly intriguing.
As research unfolds, CBG may soon rival CBD in the therapeutic landscape, offering new hope for those seeking relief from anxiety, stress, and other conditions without the psychoactive effects associated with THC. The study’s results open the door to exciting new possibilities, but further research is needed to fully understand the scope of CBG’s potential.
