BRO makes final break with Nechip Tunnel blast in Arunachal Pradesh

The Border Roads Association (BRO) has made its final “explosion” to mark the successful completion of the Nechiphu Tunnel excavation work, in Arunachal Pradesh on May 20, 2022. BRO Director-General Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry conducted it away from New Delhi. The foundation stone of the project was laid by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh on October 12, 2020.

Nechiphu Tunnel, at an altitude of 5,700 meters, differs from the “D-shaped, Single Tube Double Lane One Tunnel with a length of 500 meters” on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) Road in the Western Province of Kameng. The corridor will accommodate two people and will be fitted with modern and safety lights. The tunnel is thought to have passed through extreme fog around Nechiphu Pass which has caused disruptions to normal traffic and warships for decades. The tunnel will be provided with a state-of-the-art electro-mechanical system that includes fire extinguishers, an automatic lighting system and controlled monitoring and data acquisition systems (SCADA). It will also allow high-altitude footpaths for safe pedestrian movement that will consist of power lines, fiber optical cables and service lines to strengthen public service infrastructure.

In line with the Nechiphu Tunnel project, BRO Project Vartak has also completed the excavation of another strategic tunnel, the Twin Tube (1,555 meters and 980 meters) “Sela Tunnel Project” on the same road, January 22, 2022 Today’s explosion, therefore, marks the accumulated excavation of more than 4,500 feet, achieved by BRO Karmyogis in less than two years.

Once operational, the Necip Tunnel and the Sela Tunnel will provide secure, all-weather climate communication connections to BCT Road while minimizing carbon footprint in this critical area. Continuous tunnel construction is done by cutting through fragile and severely broken rocks. Assistant challenges are daily addressed with robust 3D monitoring and rapid application of tunnel support systems in line with the New Austrian Tunneling (NATM) System.

The BRO has been successful in performing infrastructure miracles in the country’s most challenging areas over the past two years. It took the tunnel in a big way with the successful completion of the High Altitude and Mountainous tunnels, in addition to the Atal Tunnel, the Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh and the Chamba Tunnel in Uttarakhand, also dedicated to the nation, in the past. The organization has also begun building a series of small tunnels, which will build with the resources associated with the organization.
