Nitish Kumar said that BJP could be dispatched with just 50 seats in 2024 assembly elections by united opposition

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Saturday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be dispatched with just 50 seats in the 2024 assembly elections by a united opposition and said he would leave for Delhi in two days to work for a larger opposition alliance. Kumar was speaking at a meeting of the national executive of his Janata Dal (United) party, which tasked him with working to unite opposition parties against the BJP ahead of the 2024 polls, party chief and state minister Ashok Choudhary said.

“I am leaving for Delhi after the JD(U) meetings. I am not interested in being a candidate for prime minister, but I want to strive for opposition unity, which is the current need. If the opposition unites and puts aside its differences, the result will definitely be felt in 2024 and the BJP could be restricted to less than 50 seats. I have been in touch with several leaders and will discuss the future road map,” he said.

The development comes less than a month after JD(U)  parted ways with its old ally BJP and joined forces with Lalu Yadav’s RJD, Congress and other parties in Bihar to form a new government with Kumar as chief minister. Hit by the defection of five JD(U) MLAs in Manipur to the BJP on Friday, a day ahead of his party’s state executive council meeting, Kumar dazzled his former ally and said the picture would be different in 2024 if the opposition unites. The JD(U) contested 38 seats and won six in the 60-member Manipur Assembly in the state elections held in March this year.

“All the MLAs (from Manipur) planned their visit to Patna for the national executive meeting and that happened. People are watching the behavior of BJP. 2020 also saw a conspiracy against JD(U) (Bihar polls) and reduced its number of seats. More disruptions may be on the horizon. There may be attempts to inflame communal tension in the society. I therefore appeal to all party leaders to be extremely cautious in the next two years,” Kumar, a JD(U) leader, who did not wish to be named, said during his address at the party conclave.

This is the first defection of a JD(U) MLA to the BJP after the Chief Minister’s party severed ties with the BJP. In 2020, when the two parties were allies, six of the seven JD(U) legislators in Arunachal Pradesh joined the BJP. Last month, a seventh also switched to the BJP. Meanwhile, at its national executive meeting on Saturday, the JD(U) also passed a resolution that claimed there was an “undeclared emergency” in the country under the BJP government, which was “trying to silence” opposition voices by “misusing” investigative agencies.

The BJP government at the Center calls the democratic right of dissent a “treason”. The resolution said the country was looking for an alternative to the BJP and asked all opposition parties to put aside their differences and come together. She also accused the BJP of fomenting “communal madness” in the country. “Minorities are under attack. Intolerance and extremism have increased in society. Dalits and tribals are being persecuted,” the resolution said. The party also criticized the ruling BJP for what it described as its authoritarian tendencies and hit out at the ruling party for “destabilizing” non-BJP governments in several states, including Delhi and Jharkhand.

A total of two resolutions were adopted at the meeting. The BJP, meanwhile, continued its attacks on Kumar. Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi, who served as CM Kumar’s deputy in Bihar for more than a decade, was quick to catch on. “After Arunachal, Manipur is also without JD(U). Laluji will make Bihar also JD(U) free very soon,” he tweeted. JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh said the BJP has once again shown its character. “Even when we were allies, they were doing the same in Arunachal. They will learn this only in 2024. They have a panic fear of 2024 and resort to such tactics in every state – be it Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi. Jharkhand but people are also watching. They tried it in Bihar too but nothing happened,” he said. JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said this is the character of the BJP today under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which is completely different from the Atal-Advani era. “BJP does not want any other party to grow now. But people in India are watching.”
