The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing,’ as proposed by the Department of Biotechnology.
Key Highlights of the BioE3 Policy
Innovation-Driven Support: The policy emphasizes innovation and supports research and development (R&D) and entrepreneurship across various thematic sectors. This will accelerate technology development and commercialization, with the establishment of Biomanufacturing & Bio-AI hubs and Biofoundries.
•Green Growth and Regenerative Bioeconomy: The BioE3 policy prioritizes regenerative bioeconomy models that align with India’s commitment to a ‘Net Zero’ carbon economy and the ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ initiative. This policy is expected to drive India towards accelerated green growth by promoting a circular bioeconomy.
•Job Creation and Skill Development: By fostering a robust biomanufacturing ecosystem, the policy aims to expand India’s skilled workforce, leading to significant job creation in the biotechnology sector.
•Strategic Focus Areas: The policy will concentrate on several key sectors, including high-value bio-based chemicals, biopolymers, enzymes, smart proteins, functional foods, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture and utilization, as well as marine and space research.
The BioE3 Policy aligns with the government’s broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), aiming to make the country a global leader in sustainable and innovative biomanufacturing. It seeks to address critical societal challenges such as climate change mitigation, food security, and human health through the industrialization of biology and the promotion of circular practices.
With this policy, India is poised to strengthen its biomanufacturing capabilities, foster cutting-edge innovations, and create a more sustainable future responsive to global challenges.
