Srinagar: In a significant development in Jammu and Kashmir, three terrorists were killed during an encounter with security forces in the Baramulla district on Saturday morning. The gunfight erupted in the Chak Taper Kreeri area of Pattan, North Kashmir, late Friday after a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir police, following specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists. The operation is still ongoing.
In a separate operation in Kathua district, troops from the Army’s Rising Star Corps unit eliminated two more terrorists on Friday, recovering “large war-like stores” from the scene.
Tragically, two Indian Army personnel, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were killed in action during an encounter in Kishtwar earlier on Friday. The incident took place in the Naidgham area of the Chhatroo belt, a region that connects Kishtwar with South Kashmir’s Anantnag district. Four Army personnel were injured, two of whom Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar and Sepoy Arvind Singh succumbed to their injuries later.
These encounters come ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Doda district, marking the first time a Prime Minister has visited the region in 42 years. Voting in Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly elections will take place in three phases, starting on September 18, with counting on October 8.
