NASA has issued an alert concerning the near-Earth asteroid 2024 JV33, which is set to make its closest approach to Earth on August 19. This asteroid, with an estimated diameter of about 620 feet, is part of the Apollo group, a class of asteroids known for frequently crossing Earth’s orbit.
Although 2024 JV33 will pass at a distance of approximately 2,850,000 miles around three times the distance from Earth to the Moon its proximity in astronomical terms is significant. The asteroid is traveling through space at a speed of 24,779 miles per hour.
Despite the asteroid’s considerable distance from Earth, it is classified as a near-Earth object (NEO), warranting careful observation. NASA, along with other space agencies, uses a network of telescopes and advanced computing systems to track NEOs, particularly those that come within 7.5 million kilometers (about 4.6 million miles) of Earth and are over 460 feet in size. The Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA is responsible for monitoring these objects and assessing any potential risks they may pose to our planet.
The ongoing tracking efforts by NASA ensure that we stay informed and prepared for any possible cosmic threats, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in the face of potential hazards from space.
