The abundance and sensitivity of the wavelength family of retina proteins, called opsins, dominate the animal’s visible light – from ultraviolet to distant red light.However, invertebrates and vertebrates use phylogenetically different opsins in their retina, and researchers have not yet determined whether these different opsins have an influence on what animals see, or how they adapt to their light environment.

Murphy and Westerman compiled opinion data for the 446 species of animals that took four phyla. One of these animals contained invertebrates – invertebrates, such as fish and humans.
