The Tamil Nadu government has entered into a strategic partnership with Google to explore artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives in the state. This collaboration, marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Google’s Mountain View office in the US, is set to establish a new AI-focused facility named ‘Tamil Nadu AI Labs’ in Chennai. The agreement was signed during Chief Minister MK Stalin’s ongoing visit to the US, as announced by the state’s Minister for Industries, Dr. TRB Rajaa.
In addition to the Google partnership, the Tamil Nadu government inked five other deals with major firms including Nokia, PayPal, and Infinix. These agreements aim to set up various centres in key cities such as Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore, further solidifying Tamil Nadu’s position as a hub for technological advancement.
The partnership with Google will enable the state to train 2 million youth in AI technology through the Naan Mudhalvan upskilling platform. This initiative will also support startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and rural ecosystems by providing access to Google Cloud’s AI technology and offering mentorship and networking opportunities.
Amit Zavery, Head of Google Cloud Platform, emphasized the shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI, stating, “We look forward to working together to build a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu one that not only drives innovation and creates opportunities but also empowers individuals with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age.”
On the first day of the Chief Minister’s US visit, six MoUs were signed with various firms to establish facilities in Tamil Nadu. These include a research and development centre by Nokia in Siruseri, an AI-ML development centre by PayPal in Chennai, a semiconductor innovation centre in Coimbatore by Microchip and Yield Engineering Systems, and a tech centre by Applied Materials and Infinix in Madurai.
This series of agreements highlights Tamil Nadu’s strategic focus on emerging technologies and its commitment to becoming a global leader in AI and tech innovation.
