Dipika Chikhlia said that the trailer of Adipurush shows antagonist Raavan as a Mughal and not a Sri Lankan

Actor Dipika Chikhlia said that the trailer of Adipurush shows the antagonist Raavan as a Mughal and not a Sri Lankan. Dipika essayed the iconic role of Sita in Ramananda Sagar’s Ramayan and is still famous for her role nearly four decades later. On the other hand, Adipurush is an ambitious project adapted from the Hindu mythological epic Ramayan. It stars Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan and is directed by Om Raut.

Prabhas plays the role of Ram while Saif essays the role of Raavan aka Lankesh – the king of Sri Lanka. Ever since the trailer was launched at a grand event in Ayodhya last week, it has faced criticism from many quarters. While the quality of the VFX is also a target of criticism, the teaser is mainly criticized for the inappropriate appearance of the characters.

Talking about the teaser of Adipurush, Dipika told “The characters in the film have to appeal to the audience. If the character is from Sri Lanka, they should not look like Mughals. I didn’t quite get it when we only saw him for 30 seconds in the trailer, but he looks different. I agree that times have changed and VFX is a necessary part, but only until people’s sentiments are hurt. (But then) It’s just a trailer, maybe it doesn’t do the movie justice.”

She added, “If I tried to team up with Arvind Trivedi (Ravan in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan), I wouldn’t feel comfortable. But I also believe that every actor has the freedom to portray the character as their own interpretation.” The director also responded to the widespread criticism, saying, “I was disappointed but not surprised because the film is made for a bigger medium. You can limit it to some extent, but you can’t bring it to mobile, that’s an environment I can’t control. If I had a choice, I would have never put it on YouTube, but that is the need of the hour. We have to put it out there to reach a wide audience.”
