Disaster Focus: Extreme weather events unusually heavy flooding is expected to continue in China

Hurricane Chaba has been weakened by pressure in tropical areas, but is expected to bring heavy rains to central and eastern China in the next few days as we head north, Chinese experts said on Monday. The Central Meteorological Observatory lifted a hurricane warning in Chaba late Sunday, but over the weekend China’s first typhoon bought heavy rain and wind in a few southern states already affected by heavy rains and thunderstorms for weeks.

As of Monday morning, Chaba’s heart was in the southern part of Guangxi. It is expected to travel northeast at a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour (6 to 9 miles per hour) to the provinces of Hunan and Hubei, the China Meteorological Administration said. The Weather Station in Jingzhou city of Hubei province issued a “red warning” of rain at 8:45 a.m. (0045 GMT), after towns and villages southwest of Shishou saw rainfall exceeding 40 mm. It may still rain more than 60 mm south of Shishou later in the morning, forecasts predict.

A red storm warning has also been issued in the city of Dongguan in Guangdong province. In Guangxi province, local forecasters have issued red storm warnings in Bobai and Luchuan regions, expecting heavy rainfall around the morning. From Monday to Wednesday, weather forecasters predicted heavy rain and strong winds in Guangdong province, Guangxi province, and the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Henan, and Shandong.

Heavy rains are expected in North China and northeastern China, as well as elsewhere early next week. This past weekend, more than a dozen crew members aboard an 30-man engineering vessel were missing after it twice broke through the water near Hong Kong when Chaba passed by, authorities said. In recent weeks, torrential rains and floods in southern China have damaged property, damaged cars and disrupted the daily lives of millions.Extreme weather events, including unusually severe flooding, are expected to continue in China until August, forecast forecasts last week.
