Odisha Gears Up for Cyclone Dana Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja Reviews Emergency Preparedness

A high-level meeting chaired by Odisha Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja on Tuesday focused on the state’s preparedness for the impending Cyclone Dana ensuring that critical services such as electricity, water supply, and healthcare remain operational in the wake of potential disruptions.

Key departments, including Energy, Panchayati Raj, and Drinking Water, were directed to coordinate efforts and guarantee essential services throughout the cyclone. Special emphasis was placed on operational readiness, particularly the functionality of DG/generator sets in hospitals and other critical areas, to maintain uninterrupted services during power outages.

The Chief Secretary underscored the importance of ensuring that water tanks in both rural and urban regions are filled to full capacity by October 23. Trial runs of generator sets were mandated, along with ensuring an adequate supply of diesel to power these units during emergencies. Water tankers will also be deployed wherever necessary to maintain the drinking water supply.

In addition to cyclone preparedness, the Chief Secretary reviewed Odisha’s progress on government programs and schemes. The state’s own revenue collection increased by 13.73% as of September 2024 compared to the previous year. Departments were encouraged to maximize their budgets for smooth execution of various initiatives.

Officials presented an overview of their activities up to September 2024, with a focus on improving the efficiency of fund utilization. The Chief Secretary urged all departments to prioritize public welfare, especially in light of the looming cyclone.

Citizens were advised to store adequate water and use it judiciously until normalcy is restored after the cyclone.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department); Deo Ranjan Kumar Singh, Special Relief Commissioner; and Surendra Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (General Administration and Public Grievances Department).
