Cricketing Legends Congratulate Jay Shah on Becoming the Youngest ICC Chairperson

In a historic moment for cricket, Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the new chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC), making him the youngest person ever to hold the position at just 35 years old. Shah, who will assume his new role on December 1, will succeed Greg Barclay, stepping down from his current position as BCCI secretary.

Warm Wishes from Cricket Icons

The cricketing world, both past and present, has showered Shah with congratulations and best wishes. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was among the first to extend his greetings. In a heartfelt message on X, Tendulkar praised Shah for his enthusiasm and dedication to the sport, particularly highlighting his contributions to both men’s and women’s cricket during his tenure as BCCI secretary.

“His endeavours towards prioritising both women’s cricket and men’s cricket have made the BCCI a pioneer that other boards can follow. I wish him the very best of luck towards the next phase of his journey, as he becomes the youngest chairman of the ICC,” Tendulkar wrote.

Continuing a Legacy of Indian Leadership

Tendulkar also expressed confidence in Shah’s ability to carry forward the legacy of previous Indian leaders at the ICC, such as Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. “India has sent several luminaries to lead the ICC as administrators… I am sure he will build on their legacy and take the game of cricket forward,” Tendulkar added.

Support from Current Cricket Stars

Current India ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli also joined in the chorus of congratulations. “Many congratulations Jay Shah on being elected as the ICC chairman. Wishing you great success ahead,” Kohli tweeted, while Sharma expressed his “Heartiest Congratulations” to Shah. Ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also chimed in, noting Shah’s passion for the game and wishing him luck in his new role.

Shah’s Vision for the Future of Cricket

In a statement issued by the BCCI, Shah emphasized the importance of maintaining the prominence of Test cricket, even as shorter formats continue to captivate audiences. “While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game,” Shah said.

As he prepares to lead the ICC, Shah’s focus will be on ensuring that cricketers continue to be driven toward the longer format, which he believes is essential for the sport’s integrity and future.

Shah’s election marks a new chapter in cricket administration, with the cricketing community eagerly anticipating the positive changes he will bring to the global stage.
