US Working with India to Hold Accountable Plot to Kill Sikh Separatist Leader

The United States has affirmed its commitment to working with the Indian government to hold accountable those responsible for a plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, addressed the issue during a Congressional hearing, emphasizing its seriousness and the administration’s dedication to addressing it.

Lu highlighted that the Department of Justice had alleged an Indian citizen, allegedly at the direction of someone within the Indian government, attempted to kill an American citizen on US soil. This revelation underscores the gravity of the situation, prompting the US government to raise the matter at the highest levels with India.

The case, unveiled by US prosecutors in New York in November last year, revolves around Nikhil Gupta, 52, who stands accused of collaborating with an Indian government employee in a thwarted scheme to assassinate Pannun, who holds citizenship in both the US and Canada.

The incident underscores the complex dynamics between the United States and India, highlighting the need for close cooperation and dialogue to address transnational threats and uphold the rule of law. As investigations continue, both countries remain committed to ensuring justice and preventing such incidents in the future.
