Fujitsu Unveils New Supercomputer System for Japan Meteorological Agency to Enhance Disaster Prediction and Prevention

Fujitsu has announced the delivery of a cutting-edge supercomputer system to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), aimed at bolstering prediction accuracy for typhoons and torrential rains. Scheduled to commence operations on March 5, 2024, this advanced system marks a significant stride in enabling authorities to develop data-driven plans for early warning and evacuation during natural disasters.

With computing power quadrupled compared to the previous system, this new supercomputer, coupled with Fujitsu’s linear rainband forecasting system delivered in 2023, promises enhanced accuracy in predicting various meteorological phenomena. Moreover, Fujitsu has established a dedicated platform for sharing meteorological information and data, fostering collaboration with private companies and research institutions to leverage extensive weather data for improved disaster preparedness.

Aligned with the JMA’s strategic vision outlined in the “JMA’s NWP Strategic Plan Toward 2030,” the focus remains on early warning and evacuation strategies for heavy rain and typhoon disasters. The timely dissemination of weather information to society is identified as crucial, underscoring the importance of Fujitsu’s new system in facilitating high-precision forecasts and disaster prevention measures.

Powered by Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY RX2540 M7, renowned for its performance and reliability, the new supercomputer system epitomizes the company’s commitment to supporting the JMA’s objectives for 2030. By harnessing world-class supercomputing technology, Fujitsu aims to contribute significantly to disaster prevention and mitigation, particularly in addressing water disasters exacerbated by climate change, ultimately striving for a safer, more resilient society.
