Need to fight forces creating communal divide: Sharad Pawar in Karad

A day after Ajit Pawar led a vertical split in the party to become deputy CM in the Eknath Shinde-led government, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday stressed the importance of fighting divisive forces trying to sow communal discord.

“Today in Maharashtra and the entire country, there is a split in the society in the name of caste and religion among some groups,” Sharad Pawar said while addressing NCP workers in Karad.

“Unfortunately, some of our own people have fallen victim to the BJP’s strategy to break up and destabilize other political parties,” Pawar said, urging his party workers to remain united and steadfast in their fight against communalism.

Sharad Pawar visited the memorial of his mentor and Maharashtra’s first Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan in Karad and paid floral tributes to him.

The 82-year-old leader’s visit to the late Chavan’s memorial on the occasion of Guru Purnima is seen as a show of strength, a day after his nephew Ajit Pawar led a vertical split in the NCP to become deputy chief minister in the Eknath Shinde-BJP government.

Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that he was not deterred by his nephew Ajit Pawar’s rebellion and that he would start again by going among the people.

He left Pune for Karad on Monday morning, stopping on the way to meet supporters who had lined up on roadsides to greet him and extend their support.

Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan, who hails from Karad, was also present.
