Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a statement on Thursday.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Modi on Thursday to invite him to the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The construction of the new Parliament building is now complete and the new building symbolizes the spirit of independent India (Atmanirbhar Bharat),” the Lok Sabha statement said.

The building of the current parliament was completed in 1927 and there was a “lack of space” according to current needs.

“In both chambers, there was also a lack of appropriate organization of meetings of representatives, which affected the effectiveness of the work of deputies. In view of the above, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for Parliament,” the statement said. Located next to the existing Parliament building, the new building will be able to accommodate 888 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 300 in the Rajya Sabha, against the existing capacities of 543 and 250, a Lok Sabha statement said.

After the PM laid the foundation stone of the new building on 10 December 2020, construction began in January 2021 and was expected to be completed by November 2022.

The building was designed by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management, which is the Consultant to the Central Public Works Department for the larger Central Vista redevelopment project and built by Tata Projects Ltd.
