Emerging Technology Focus: What is 3D printing technology and how does it work? How this technology can change the future construction activity in the world

3D printing is an additional process in which layers of objects are formed to form a 3D component. This is in contrast to the production processes that take place, where the final design is cut into a large block of material. As a result, 3D printing creates minimal material damage. The first 3D printing press was developed by Hideo Kodama of the Nagoya Municipal Industrial Research Institute, where he developed two additional methods for making 3D models.

3D Printing Technologies

There are three broad types of 3D printing technology; sintering, melting, and stereo lithography.

• Sintering is a technology in which goods are burned, but not melted, in order to build high-quality materials. Metal powder is used for direct metal laser installation while thermoplastic powders are used for laser sintering selection.

• 3D printing techniques include powder bed, melting electron beam and direct power insertion, these use lasers, electric arcs or electron beams to print objects by melting objects together at high temperatures.

• Stereo-lithography uses photo-polymerization to create components. This technology uses the right light source to interact with the equipment in a selected way to heal and tighten the opposite part of the object into smaller layers.

How long does 3D printing take?

Printing time depends on many factors, including the size of the segment and the settings used for printing. The quality of the finished part is also important when determining the printing time as high quality materials take longer to produce. 3D printing can take anything from a few minutes to a few hours or days – speed, resolution and volume are all important features here.

How 3D technology can transform the future construction work of the world

3D Tech Enables Better Interaction

This is where BIM comes in. According to the WEF, building knowledge models gain power in the industry as a platform for collaboration and access to data across all stages of the building’s life cycle Plays 3D location data (such as laser scan of the site, photogrammetric as built-in of the building, etc.) on the same site as property data, temperature data, or any other type of data that may work.

he explains, “BIM facilitates co-operation between all stakeholders and thus holds the promise of great efficient and effective benefits. All participants can contribute information and extract information from the central model. “

But VR and AR play a major role in improving collaboration, too. These communication tools help to give participants accurate access to the 3D models included in the architectural information model. They help to make extremely technical information easier for everyone to understand, which means that now everyone can access, discuss, and interact with the data contained in the model throughout the life cycle of the building.

 3D Automating Construction Equipment

Although the construction industry often relies on machinery, it is lagging behind when it comes to private cars. Compared to the automotive industry, or even mining, construction shows lower levels of automation.

That may soon change. Along with the development of robots, machine learning, and unmanned vehicles, the development of 3D technology paves the way for automated devices.

 3D Brings New Design Methods

3D printing is well-known for producing bobble-heads and keychains, but it is ready to have a legal impact on the way we build buildings and infrastructure as well.Technology is in its early stages when it comes to building programs.WEF notes that large 3D printing is not bad enough for most programs and produces poorly looking results. In addition, large printers are always slow and small printers are too small to use. And it is expensive.

If we continue to develop technology, however, it will produce huge benefits. According to the report, the technology promises up to 80% productivity in some applications, as well as a significant reduction in waste because things can be built on purpose.”Construction time on some buildings can be reduced from weeks to hours, and custom sections can be provided at a much lower cost.”

 3D Allows Strong Project Monitoring

Project monitoring can be challenging, and the cost of an unexpected problem can be huge. According to the WEF, construction monitoring is often “a little more than just a combination of cost overruns and construction delays.”

In order to address the potential negative impact on budgetary budgets and schedules alike, the report says vigilance requires diligence. It needs to start providing data that can be quickly translated into action.

Their recommendation to achieve this goal, Monitor daily – if possible – using state-of-the-art digital tools. Like 3D photography.

KllkReal World Model: Apps like SKUR take a project laser scan as it is built now and compare it with previous models, including the actual design. This helps to identify project errors before they require expensive digging.

5. 3D Improves Performance Models

This follows an earlier point: The WEF emphasizes the need for photography as a building rather than relying on what is designed as a design. Without an accurate description of the structure as it actually exists, they say, it is impossible to improve precise performance models, or increase the cost of the life cycle.

Of course, 3D scanning technology is ready to assemble as it is built. Real-world example: Atkins has worked with Heathrow Airport to operate LiDAR scanners and automate the creation of BIM models. This forms the basis for marking assets, as well as well-organized and well-maintained operations.
